At what age should a child have their first eye test?
The first examination should be carried out in the first months of life if risk factors are present. A routine screening test is recommended between the ages of two and three.
Are children's eye examinations painful?
No, all children's eye examinations are completely painless and harmless to the child's vision.
How often should a child see an ophthalmologist?
After the first examination at age 2–3, the next at age 4, and then every two years. The frequency may increase if visual problems are identified.
What symptoms should parents watch for?
Head tilting, blinking, eye rubbing, difficulty concentrating, squint, excessive tearing, and any difference in appearance between the two eyes.
Can children wear spectacles?
Yes, children can wear spectacles from a very young age. Special frames designed for young patients are available.
What is amblyopia and can it be treated?
Amblyopia, or "lazy eye", is reduced vision in one eye. With early detection and appropriate treatment it can be effectively corrected.
Can I spot vision problems in my child myself?
Yes — watch whether your child tilts their head when looking, blinks frequently, rubs their eyes, has difficulty concentrating or closes one eye while reading.
When should I take my child for a pre-school eye test?
A pre-school eye test is best carried out at age 5–6, allowing time for any necessary correction before the child starts school.
Does a squint in an infant always need treatment?
A physiological squint in infants up to six months of age may be normal. If it persists beyond that or worsens, an ophthalmological consultation is recommended.
Can my child inherit refractive errors?
Yes, refractive errors such as myopia can be hereditary. If there is a family history of vision problems, regular examinations are particularly important.
How should I prepare my child for their first eye appointment?
